Synopsis Haiti, 1962: A man is brought back from the dead only to be sent to the living hell of the sugarcane fields. In Paris, 55 years later, at the prestigious Légion d’honneur boarding school, a Haitian girl confesses an old family secret to a group of new friends - never imagining that this strange tale will convince a heartbroken classmate to do the unthinkable. Cast Crew Details Genres Director Producers Writer Editor Cinematography Production Design Composer Popular reviews More There are any number of horror films about “voodoo” magic and its colonialist underpinnings — Jacques Tourneur’s 1943 “I Walked with a Zombie” remaining the most formative example — but only Bertrand Bonello’s take on the subject includes an oral presentation on the life and times of Rihanna. It would be foolish to expect anything else from the firebrand director behind “House of Pleasures” and “Nocturama, ” whose films see history as less of a forward march than an uneasy churn; his work obfuscates clearly delineated temporalities in order to emphasize that while everyone may live in the present the past is never really dead. As its title suggests, “Zombi Child” finds Bonello taking that idea to its logical and most… Hoop-tober (hopefully), #25: This is so tremendously similar to a short piece that I wrote while locked in a residential treatment facility, during my senior year of high school (the narrative was legitimately a multigenerational story about Clairvius Narcisse himself, and one of his relatives! ) but, alas, that is a lost chronicle -- as is my contemporary Little Red Riding Hood redux -- a sad actuality that I've been trying to come to terms with for years, swept away in the clouds of non-replication and discarded student desktops. Oh well, I could never tell a story as well as maestro Bonello anyway. After the godardian doomed revolutionaries of Nocturama, Bonello asks for a reconsideration of the very concept of revolution - in a classroom of all places. This takes me back to what Régis Debray said in his book about May '68: the counterrevolution was so successful that it's nearly impossible to have a revolution in Europe now, but the African revolutionary movements are well and alive. Perhaps one of the biggest changes in European politics that Marx didn't anticipate was the turn towards social-democracies. Of course, this kind of regime can only successfully exist in a post-industrial society, i. e. in a society that has withdrawn from the industrial competion for the lowest cost of production. This current state of affairs where… "not hell, just as it is. " A mixed bag. Bonello can certainly come up with a scene and one can admire his go for broke mentaily. His handling of young cast and shifting power balances is fine as well, yet while one can praise Bonello for not setting for facile white European humanism, this remains a movie about the heritage of European colonialism that can't avoid failing pray to it. Knowing where the booby traps are doesn't mean you are avoiding them. Recent reviews Saw this with no real background info, kept wondering why the random white girl was such a protagonist, left the movie, saw that the director is a white French man.... of course. Első fele vontatott, végig szenvedtem, több részletben sikerült csak letolni. Unpredictable is the name of the game with Bonello and the film burns and builds slowly into a masterfully edited final act. Screened at Living Room Theaters in Downtown Portland, Oregon. Top-notch cinematography! As for the rest of it... Screenplay feels a bit lazy —I mean, come on, the final monologue serves the sole purpose of explaining the whole movie to and for the audience—, and editing is at least arguable. Overall it made me feel hardly anything, although some scenes definitely had potential. However, part of it (I doubt it’s a lot tbh) may be due to my lack of familiarity with the subject. I’ll be reading into this and may change the review. A full review of this has been a long time coming. As I figured would happen, when I finally gathered all of my thoughts it turned into something very  long. Nevertheless, I put a lot of time into it, and if you saw this movie and would like to read my write-up you can do so here. I may edit it a bit further, though. Some extra thoughts: Maybe my biggest criticism of this movie is that though it mentions Rihanna’s Diamonds, it doesn’t end up using it. Considering the absolutely perfect, banger filled collection of needle drops in Nocturama (which is still fprobably my favorite film of the 2010s), I will admit I was disappointed. Anyway, this an immense work. … Creeping through Napoleon's hallways, guided by cell phone light. Funny that John Carpenter came up in conversations around Nocturama  - both for how the young terrorists hole up in a vacant shopping mall in the movie’s second half and for Bonello writing his own pulsing synth score, as Carpenter did for his movies - only to have Bonello’s next feature be an outright zombie movie. Not that it’s a straight forward genre exercise - its shape is unique, moving between two different countries (Haiti and France) and multiple timelines, which eventually start to overlap and fold back on themselves - but it culminates with the stuff of true horror that’s genuinely unsettling and surreal. As for “what’s it all about? ”, Luke Gorham pretty much summed it up. This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth. Although the last twenty minutes are breathless, the introduction languishes and lasts about eighty minutes. Thus, in order to appreciate the very ending, you'll have to be patient. very patient... Appreciated the effort. Really wished someone looked over the script and shooting beforehand. Very messy. Appreciated the theme nevertheless. Just by looking at that thumbnail it reminds me of my last Saturday night. 2019 Anyone? Miss this channel. Beginning in Haiti in the early sixties, Zombi Child" deals with voodoo and is one of the best and most poetic horror films in many a moon. It is obvious from the title and the setting that we are meant to think of a much earlier film with a similar setting but that would appear to be where the comparisons with Jacques Tourneur's "I Walked with a Zombie" ends for in the next scene we are in comtemporary France and a group of schoolgirls are being taught French history in a very white classroom.
What follows is a deliciously unsettling movie that manages to encompass the pains of teenage romance with a tale of the 'undead' as a metaphor for colonialism and it actually works. I can't think of too many examples in recent cinema where two opposing themes have been as beautifully united as they are here. In some ways it's closer to something like "The Neon Demon" or the recent remake of "Suspiria" than it is to Val Lewton. Here is a film with a creeping sense of dread, we've all seen films in which schoolgirls are not as sweet as they appear to be) and the grand guignol finale is as spooky as a good horror movie should be. It also confirms director Bertrand Bonello as one of the most exciting talents working anywhere today.
