The big-name cast really packed a wallop. Truly great performances all around. It takes real talent to make a movie that, even though you know the ending, really puts you on the edge of your seat getting there.
But that's only half the movie, as it is complemented by the stunning visual effects and brilliant soundtrack. A perfect example of this is the launch, which I consider to be one of the finest sequences on celluloid. If you did not think "wow" during that part, get yourself checked.

Movies | ‘Created Equal’ Review: A Justice of Few Words Finds His Voice Clarence Thomas is usually silent on the Supreme Court, but he had plenty to say to some friendly filmmakers. Credit... Manifold Productions Created Equal: Clarence Thomas in His Own Words Directed by Michael Pack Documentary PG-13 1h 56m The most obvious selling point of “Created Equal: Clarence Thomas in His Own Words” also happens to be its most conspicuous deficiency. Thomas has distinguished himself with his silence on the Supreme Court; in 2016, he asked his first question from the bench in a decade. (Three years later, he asked another. ) Speaking directly to the camera in “Created Equal, ” Thomas is veritably chatty, reminiscing about his childhood, extolling the work of Ayn Rand, smiling wryly at his own quips. The producers, Michael Pack and Gina Cappo Pack, spent more than 30 hours interviewing Thomas and his wife, Virginia. Simply getting to watch Thomas expound on his thoughts for an extended length of time constitutes its own kind of novelty — a surprise that begins to wear off when it becomes clear that Thomas will mostly be rehashing the life story he already recounted in his 2007 memoir, “My Grandfather’s Son. ” That memoir was a fascinating document — shrewdly evasive yet occasionally revealing. This new film, by contrast, is about as revelatory as a campaign ad. The only talking heads are Thomas’s and Virginia’s; no other perspectives are offered. Funders for the project include conservative foundations belonging to the Kochs and the Scaifes. Michael Pack, who also directed the film, has written in praise of Stephen K. Bannon’s cultural production efforts. “Documentaries, ” Pack wrote in 2017, “have been the almost exclusive playground of the Left. ” Thomas recounts the major moments in an undeniably eventful life. He supported the black power movement in the ’60s and ’70s and voted for Ronald Reagan in 1980; his conservative turn, he says, was the inevitable reaction to liberal hypocrisy. Clips of Anita Hill testifying at Thomas’s confirmation hearings in 1991 appear in the second half of the film, after the filmmakers have taken care not to disturb their admiring portrait of Thomas as a faithful Christian and doting family man. Hill’s recollections of sexual harassment get predictably cast as part of a feminist smear campaign designed to destroy him. But the overriding tenor of this documentary is triumphant and upbeat. Thomas’s journey is intermittently visualized by footage from inside a boat as it makes its way through marshy wetlands before arriving, just as the sun is setting, at a sturdy dock. If “Created Equal” is trying to promote the conservative cause, it does so gently, and blandly. The only moment of mild discomfort occurs when the filmmakers ask Thomas about the end of his first marriage. The otherwise voluble Thomas signals that he’ll be having none of it, turning momentarily awkward and taciturn: “Yeah, it was, you know, you live with it. ” Created Equal: Clarence Thomas in His Own Words Rated PG-13 for the unavoidable segment on sexual harassment. Running time: 1 hour 56 minutes.

Created equal clarence thomas in his own words review. “Created Equal” is a recently released documentary about the life of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas. It is a viscerally powerful journey through tumultuous times, both in Thomas’s life and in the life of our nation during the era of segregation, through the Civil Rights movement and into the Senate Judiciary Committee room for Thomas’s confirmation hearings. The movie opens with an evocative view of Georgia’s meandering swampland near where Clarence Thomas was born. It is a scene that reoccurs throughout the film as forks in the road of Thomas’s life present choices he must make, some of which are gut-wrenching. Clarence Thomas and his brother were born into poverty. After their father left, they lived for a period of time with their mother until her parents took the boys in to raise them. It was Thomas’s grandfather who provided stern discipline and instilled a hard work ethic that took root in Clarence’s character and carried him through unimaginably challenging times as a young black man in a white man’s world. In this short commentary, I cannot do justice to the fortitude displayed by Clarence Thomas as he navigated Catholic school, seminary, Holy Cross College, Yale Law School, the Missouri Attorney General’s office, Monsanto Chemical Company, the Senate Commerce Committee, Department of Education, Chairman of the US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, DC Court of Appeals Judge, and finally as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court. At each fork in the road, Thomas weighed his opportunities. Sometimes, he abruptly changed course when racism reared its ugly head. But he did not change course when stakes perhaps were highest, during Senate Judiciary Committee hearings for his confirmation to the Supreme Court. It was during those confirmation hearings that Clarence Thomas delivered a stunning rebuke to the all white, all male Senate Judiciary Committee chaired by then Senator Joe Biden. Thomas declared that the hearings were, “a high-tech lynching for uppity blacks who deign to think for themselves, to do for themselves, to have different ideas, and it is a message that, unless you kowtow to an old order, this is what will happen to you. You will be lynched, destroyed, caricatured by a committee of the US Senate, rather than hung from a tree. ” Fast forward to June 2015 when Donald Trump declared his candidacy for President and vowed to return governing power to the people. Like Clarence Thomas, President Trump refuses to kowtow to an old order, and for that he, too, has been vilified. To digress for a moment, consider the political division in our country that has emerged over the last three decades, and how it is reflected in a series of Senate votes. On October 15, 1991, the Senate confirmed Clarence Thomas to the Supreme Court on a vote of 52-48, after unproven salacious allegations of sexual misconduct. Twenty-seven years later, the Senate confirmed Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court on a vote of 50-48 after unproven salacious allegations of sexual misconduct. When it came time for President Trump’s impeachment trial in the Senate, that body refused to re-do what should have been the work of the House of Representatives and, by a vote of 51-49, refused to call additional witnesses. (This was after the President was denied basic due process protections in the House. ) Final votes to acquit were 52-48 (Article 1) and 53-47 (Article 2). Look again at those vote margins. As the old adage goes, the more things change, the more they stay the same. Statesmanship has given way to hyper-partisan gamesmanship, increasingly driven by the radical / Progressive political Left. Clarence Thomas Is a kind of North Star among our governing institutions. He holds firmly to Constitutional principles that offer guideposts to the functioning of a healthy Republic. Even if you don’t always agree with his legal opinions, he deserves admiration for his formidable work ethic, disciplined intellect, reverence for the Constitution, and strong religious convictions. “Created Equal” is showing at the AMC Georgetown 14 movie theater. Please make a point of seeing it. Prepare to be deeply moved by the life and words of Clarence Thomas. Guest Contributor Catharine Trauernicht Catharine Trauernicht fulfilled a 9th grade goal when she went to work on Capitol Hill after graduating from Mount Holyoke College. When she began to confuse millions and billions (that was in the mid-late 1970’s), she left the Hill to enroll in The Wharton School at the U. of PA. Excellent interview. Can we please get more journalism like this‼️❓🇺🇸. Although Clarence Thomas remains a controversial figure, loved by some, reviled by others, few know much more than a few headlines and the recollections of his contentious confirmation battle with Anita Hill. With unprecedented access, the producers interviewed Justice Clarence Thomas and his wife, Virginia, for over 30 hours of interview time, over many months. Justice Thomas tells his entire life’s story, looking directly at the camera, speaking frankly to the audience. After a brief introduction, the documentary proceeds chronologically, combining Justice Thomas’ first person account with a rich array of historical archive material, period and original music, personal photos, and evocative recreations. Unscripted and without narration, the documentary takes the viewer through this complex and often painful life, dealing with race, faith, power, jurisprudence, and personal resilience. In 1948, Clarence Thomas was born into dire poverty in Pin Point, Georgia, a Gullah- speaking peninsula in the segregated South. His father abandoned the family when Clarence was two years old. His mother, unable to care for two boys, brought Clarence and his brother, Myers, to live with her father and his wife. Thomas’ grandfather, Myers Anderson, whose schooling ended at the third grade, delivered coal and heating oil in Savannah. He gave the boys tough love and training in hard work. He sent them to a segregated Catholic school where the Irish nuns taught them self-discipline and a love of learning. From there, Thomas entered the seminary, training to be a priest. As the times changed, Thomas began to rebel against the values of his grandfather. Angered by his fellow seminarians’ racist comments following the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. and disillusioned by the Catholic Church’s general failure to support the civil rights movement, Thomas left the seminary. His grandfather felt Thomas had betrayed him by questioning his values and kicked Thomas out of his house. In 1968, Thomas enrolled as a scholarship student at the College of the Holy Cross in Massachusetts. While there, he helped found the Black Student Union and supported the burgeoning Black Power Movement. Then, Thomas’s views began to change, as he saw it, back to his grandfather’s values. He judged the efforts of the left and liberals to help his people to be demeaning failures. To him, affirmative action seemed condescending and ineffective, sending African-American students to schools where they were not prepared to succeed. He watched the busing crisis in Boston tear the city apart. To Thomas, it made no sense. Why, he asked, pluck poor black kids out of their own bad schools only to bus them to another part of town to sit with poor white students in their bad schools? At Yale Law School, he felt stigmatized by affirmative action, treated as if he were there only because of his race, minimizing his previous achievements. After graduating in 1974, he worked for then State Attorney General John Danforth in Missouri, eventually working in the Reagan administration, first running the Civil Rights Division of the Department of Education and then the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. In 1990, he became a judge on the U. S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. In 1991, President George H. W. Bush nominated Clarence Thomas to the Supreme Court. His confirmation hearings would test his character and principles in the crucible of national controversy. Like the Bork hearings in 1987, the Democrats went after Thomas’ record and his jurisprudence, especially natural law theory, but also attacked his character. When that failed, and he was on the verge of being confirmed, a former employee, Anita Hill, came forth to accuse him of sexual harassment. The next few days of televised hearings riveted the nation. Finally, defending himself against relentless attacks by the Democratic Senators on the committee, Thomas accused them of running “a high-tech lynching for uppity blacks who in any way deign to think for themselves, to do for themselves, to have different ideas. ” After wall-to-wall television coverage, according to the national polls, the American people believed Thomas by more than a 2-1 margin. Yet, Thomas was confirmed by the closest margin in history, 52-48. In his 27 years on the court, Thomas’s jurisprudence has often been controversial—from his brand of originalism to his decisions on affirmative action and other hot button topics. Critical journalists often point out that he rarely speaks in oral argument. The public remains curious about Clarence Thomas—both about his personal history and his judicial opinions. His 2007 memoir, My Grandfather’s Son, was number one on The New York Times’ bestseller list. In addition to the two-hour feature length documentary film, a companion website providing more details and curriculum materials will be created and available. The website will draw on the over thirty hours of interviews of both Justice Thomas and his wife, most of which did not appear in the film.

This was/is a beautiful film. February 8, 2020 1:31PM PT The Supreme Court justice offers a monologue of self-justification in a talking-head memoir that's revealing even when it doesn't want to be. If you watch “Created Equal: Clarence Thomas in His Own Words” looking for a clue as to Thomas’ inner workings, a key to who Clarence Thomas really is, then you’ll have to wait a while before it arrives. But it does. The reason it takes so long is that Thomas, dressed in a red tie, light shirt, and blue jacket (yes, his entire outfit is color-coordinated to the American flag), his graying head looking impressive and nearly statue-ready as he gazes into the camera, presents himself as a regular guy, affably growly and folksy in a casual straight-shooter way. And while I have no doubt that’s an honest aspect of who he is, it’s also a shrewdly orchestrated tactic, a way of saying: Don’t try to look for my demons — you won’t find them. The revealing moment comes when Thomas recalls the 1991 Senate hearings in which he was grilled on national television as part of the Supreme Court confirmation process. Does he go back and talk about Anita Hill? Yes, he does (I’ll get to that shortly), but that isn’t the revealing part. Discussing Anita Hill, Thomas reveals next to nothing. His métier now is exactly what it was then: Deny, deny, deny. Thomas tips his hand, though, when he recalls the moment that a senator asked if he’d ever had a private conversation about Roe v. Wade. At the time, he said no — and now, 30 years later, that “no” has just gotten louder. In hindsight, he’s incredulous that anyone would simply presume that he’d ever had a private discussion about Roe v. He’s almost proud of how wrong they were to think so. In a Senate hearing, when you say that you’ve never had that kind of conversation, it’s in all likelihood political — a way, in this case, of keeping your beliefs about abortion ambiguous and close to the vest. A way of keeping them officially off the table. In “Created Equal, ” however, Thomas is being sincere. He has always maintained that he finds it insulting — and racist — that people would expect an African-American citizen like himself to conform to a prescribed liberal ideology. And in the same vein, he thinks it’s ridiculous that a Senate questioner expected him to say that he’d ever spent two minutes sitting around talking about Roe v. Wade. But talk about an argument that backfires! I’m not a federal judge (and the last time I checked, I’ve never tried to become a Supreme Court justice), but I’ve had many conversations in my life about Roe v. Why wouldn’t I? I’m an ordinary politically inclined American. I mean, how could you not talk about it — ever? Abortion rights, no matter where you happen to stand on them, are a defining issue of our world. And the fact that Clarence Thomas was up for the role of Supreme Court justice, and that he still views it as A-okay to say that he’d never had a single discussion about Roe v. Wade, shows you where he’s coming from. He has opinions and convictions. But he is, in a word, incurious. He’s a go-along-to-get-along kind of guy, a man who worked hard and achieved something and enjoyed a steady rise without ever being driven to explore things. He was a bureaucrat. Which is fine; plenty of people are. But not the people we expect to be on the Supreme Court. “Created Equal” is structured as a monologue of self-justification, a two-hour infomercial for the decency, the competence, and the conservative role-model aspirationalism of Clarence Thomas. Since he followed the 1991 Senate hearings, even in victory, by going off and licking his wounds, maintaining a public persona that was studiously recessive, there’s a certain interest in “hanging out” with Thomas and taking in his cultivated self-presentation. The movie, in its public-relations heart, is right-wing boilerplate (though it’s mild next to the all-in-for-Trump documentary screeds of Dinesh D’Souza), and there are worse ways to get to know someone like Thomas than to watch him deliver what is basically the visual version of an I-did-it-my-way audiobook memoir, with lots of news clips and photographs to illustrate his words. The first half of the movie draws you in, because it’s basically the story of how Thomas, born in 1948 in the rural community of Pin Point, Georgia, was raised in a penniless family who spoke the creole language of Gullah, and of how he pulled himself up by his bootstraps. After a fire left the family homeless, he and his brother went off to Savannah to live with their grandfather, an illiterate but sternly disciplined taskmaster who gave Thomas his backbone of self-reliance. He entered Conception Seminary College when he was 16, and he loved it — but in a story Thomas has often told, he left the seminary after the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. when he overheard a fellow student make an ugly remark about King. That’s a telling anecdote, but there’s a reason Thomas showcases it the way he does. It’s his one official grand statement of racial outrage. In “Created Equal, ” he talks for two hours but says next to nothing about his feelings on the Civil Rights movement, or on what it was like to be raised in the Jim Crow South. As a student at Holy Cross, the Jesuit liberal arts college near Boston, he joined a crew of black “revolutionaries” and dressed the part in Army fatigues, but he now mocks that stage of his development, cutting right to his conservative awakening, which coalesced around the issue of busing. Thomas thought it was nuts to bus black kids from Roxbury to schools in South Boston that were every bit as bad as the ones they were already attending. And maybe he was right. Thomas, using busing and welfare as his example, decries the liberal dream as a series of idealistic engineering projects that human beings were then wedged into. There may be aspects of truth to that critique, but liberalism was also rolling up its sleeves to grapple with the agony of injustice. The philosophy that Thomas evolved had a connect-the-dots perfection to it: Treat everyone equal! Period! How easy! It certainly sounds good on paper, yet you want to ask: Couldn’t one use the same logic that rejects affirmative action programs to reject anti-discrimination law? Thomas projects out from his own example: He came from nothing and made something of himself, so why can’t everyone else? But he never stops to consider that he was, in fact, an unusually gifted man. His aw-shucks manner makes him likably unpretentious, but where’s his empathy for all the people who weren’t as talented or lucky? In “Created Equal, ” Thomas continues to treat Anita Hill’s testimony against him as part of a liberal smear campaign — and, therefore, as a lie. He compares himself to Tom Robinson, the railroaded black man in “To Kill a Mockingbird, ” viewing himself as a pure victim. Thomas’ wife, Virginia Lamp, who sat by his side at the hearings (and is interviewed in the film), stands by him today. But more than two years into the #MeToo revolution, the meaning of the Clarence Thomas/Anita Hill Senate testimony stands clearer than ever. It was the first time in America that a public accusation of sexual harassment shook the earth. The meaning of those hearings transcends the fight over whether one more conservative justice got to be added to the Supreme Court. Thomas now admits that he refused to withdraw his nomination less out of a desire to serve on the Supreme Court than because caving in would have been death to him. “I’ve never cried uncle, ” he says, “whether I wanted to be on the Supreme Court or not. ” It’s an honest confession, but a little like the Roe v. Wade thing: Where was his intellectual and moral desire to serve on the court? By then, he’d been a federal judge for just 16 months, and he admits that he wasn’t drawn to that job either; but he found that he liked the work. Thomas also explains why, once he had ascended to the high court, he went through a period where, famously, he didn’t ask a single question at a public hearing for more than 10 years. His rationalization (“The referee in the game should not be a participant in the game”) is, more or less, nonsense. But his silence spoke volumes. It was his passive-aggressive way of turning inward, of treating an appointment he didn’t truly want with anger — of coasting as a form of rebellion. It was his way of pretending to be his own man, even as he continued to play the hallowed conservative role of good soldier. . Created Equal: Clarence Thomas in His Own words of wisdom. Created equal 3a clarence thomas in his own words live. Created Equal: Clarence Thomas In His Own Words ~ The Imaginative Conservative Skip to content One of the best contemporary memoirs I’ve read in the last decade is My Grandfather’s Son, which was published in 2007. In his tale that ended with the fierce 1991 confirmation battle for his seat on the U. S. Supreme Court, Clarence Thomas told a remarkable story of his journey from being raised by a single mother in Jim Crow-era Georgia poverty to taking a place at the top of the nation’s judicial branch. It’s a fascinating and truly all-American story of an important figure on the Court. The necessity of saying that he is important is truly a sad fact. Despite the popular but racist liberal slurs (sometimes said, sometimes illustrated in cartoons) about how Justice Thomas was simply a “sock-puppet, ” “lawn jockey, ” or shoeshine boy for the late Justice Antonin Scalia, those who follow legal and political philosophy know that Justice Thomas, though voting with Justice Scalia quite often, has a somewhat different judicial philosophy. His originalism differs in several ways from Scalia’s (which interested readers can explore in detail in book-length works by Ralph Rossum and Paul Scott Gerber), but the most important is that Justice Thomas takes into account not merely the texts of the Constitution and laws at hand, as did Justice Scalia the textualist. Justice Thomas’s jurisprudence is based on taking seriously the natural law principles in the Founding, most prominently the political equality enshrined in the Declaration of Independence. Hence the title of Michael Pack’s excellent new documentary on Justice Thomas being shown in select theaters across the country: Created Equal: Clarence Thomas In His Own Words. [*] In addition to being a producer and director of thirteen documentaries, Mr. Pack is a former president of the Claremont Institute, whose conservatism takes its starting point and its focus from the American Founding. It is therefore not surprising that the film connects Justice Thomas’s roots in a time and place when black Americans were denied the dignity of equal treatment under the law with his eventual embrace of a natural rights and natural law philosophy that he adopted in part through the influence of John Marini and Ken Masugi. Both worked for Justice Thomas in the eighties and are now senior fellows at the Claremont Institute. During most cuts in the film, an image of the Declaration’s lines about all men being created equal runs across the screen. To Mr. Pack’s credit, however, the movie never descends into a con law lecture. It’s an opportunity to hear the story of an amazing but winding journey from the standpoint of Justice Thomas and, to a lesser extent, his wife Virginia. Mr. Pack recorded thirty hours of interviews, including some recordings of Justice Thomas reading the most beautiful passages from his memoir. Laced through the movie are scenes of a small boat seen from above navigating the maze-like wetlands around Pin Point, Georgia, the site of the Justice’s earliest memories. The movie’s original score by Charlie Barnett is beautiful and often plaintive. With his brother and their somewhat erratic mother, Justice Thomas spent his first few years in Pin Point, where the poverty experienced by his Gullah family and neighbors was livable and off-set by the tight-knit community. His father abandoned the family when he was two, and his mother was able to survive for a while on hard work. When she moved Clarence and his brother to Savannah after a fire destroyed their home, they found the urban poverty much more unbearable. Justice Thomas recalls the sewage from tenement toilets being flushed out into the yards. Archival photos of the city show the boards that denizens would position from the street to their porches to avoid walking through the waste. When young Clarence was seven, his mother asked her own parents, Myers and Christine Anderson, to take in her two young boys. While Christine was a comforting figure, Myers was nearly illiterate, but a fiercely independent thinker whose memorization of swaths of the Bible had led him to be a Republican and also convert to Catholicism in the late 1940s. This unbending disciplinarian believed that the curse of the fall relating to working by the sweat of one’s brow was best embraced as a reality. He greeted the boys with a warning: “The damn vacation is over. ” It was not an act. The young boys were required to help out their grandfather on the truck he used to sell fuel oil and ice every day after they came back from the segregated parochial school they attended. In the summers, Anderson had them working all day on a small farm property he possessed. Justice Thomas recalls with relish the reply to the boys’ occasional pleas that they were unable to do a job: “Old man can’t is dead; I helped bury him. ” An excellent student and one who took the faith seriously, Justice Thomas asked to enter St. John Vianney Minor Seminary in the middle of high school. His grandfather told him that he could do this, but he couldn’t quit seminary. Justice Thomas loved the liturgy (he mentions his love of Lauds, Vespers, and Gregorian chant especially) and he excelled in his studies—an image from his yearbook reveals the legend below his picture: “Blew the test! Only a 98”—but found it difficult to be the only black student at the seminary. He is grateful now for the suggestion by one teacher that he learn standard English—his speech at the time was, he says, a mixture of the Gullah dialect and southern English—but it was somewhat alienating. After passing on to Conception Seminary College in Missouri, the disconnect became unbearable as the Civil Rights movement marched on and Catholic bishops were nearly uniformly silent. The breaking point came when he entered his dormitory on April 4, 1968, only to hear a fellow seminarian respond to Martin Luther King, Jr. ’s shooting, “Good. I hope the son of a b— dies! ” Justice Thomas left the seminary at this point, which prompted his grandfather to say that he would have to live on his own now since he was making “a man’s decision. ” After briefly moving back in with his mother, Justice Thomas was accepted to Holy Cross College in Worcester, Massachusetts for the fall. Stinging from the betrayal of the Church and his grandfather, Justice Thomas embraced the view that race “explained everything” and formed a radical left-wing substitute for the religion he’d left behind. After two years of radicalism, Justice Thomas participated in a riot in Boston whose violence rattled him. Returning to Holy Cross in the wee hours of the morning, he entered the chapel and prayed for the first time since he’d matriculated. At that point, though still embracing progressivist views, he started to live out some bourgeois values. He married a fellow student at the end of college and continued on to Yale Law, where he started to shift to what he calls a “lazy libertarian” viewpoint. His main concern was his own autonomy. Upon graduation he went to work for the Republican attorney general of Missouri, an Episcopal priest named John Danforth. This work started to break down some of his recently-formed views about white racism as the main problem for blacks. His discovery that black victims of crime overwhelmingly suffered at the hands of black criminals shook his race-based worldview. After a stint in the business world, Justice Thomas came to Washington to work for his old boss, now a senator. His views of the world were slowly moving back to the ones instilled in him by his grandfather, especially as he discovered black intellectuals such as Thomas Sowell who didn’t toe the left-wing line. A young Juan Williams outed him as a conservative in a column that expressed the commonplace view that blacks with views like his are somehow incomprehensible traitors or suck-ups to the white power structure. At the same time, the grind of the Washington world helped lead to the breakdown of his first marriage, a subject on which Justice Thomas is noticeably much more reticent than other topics. This is natural, and like the other emotions that are visible on his face, they lend humanity to a man who has too often been caricatured. His mother’s comment about him that he was “too stubborn to cry” may be true, but the moist eyes and the movements of this great man when remembering his grandfather or raising his son, Jamal, or the difficult times in public life, led to a number of sniffles in the theater I was in. Justice Thomas is also visibly moved when he describes his second wife, Virginia, as a gift from God he could not refuse. His time in the Reagan administration chairing the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission led to an appointment in the federal judiciary. Though enlivened by his discussions with Masugi and Marini about the Constitution, he initially resisted an appointment to the bench because he thought that being a judge was something for old people. Convinced that he could resign, he embraced the work and found that he liked it. In 1991, President George H. W. Bush nominated him for the Supreme Court, bringing out the long knives of the abortion industry and the left. Archival footage shows us feminists declaring flatly that they will “bork” this man. Virginia Thomas speaks for this viewer in holding a special anger at the absurd prospect of Teddy Kennedy sitting in judgment over claims of “sexual harassment” by Anita Hill. The footage of Senate Judiciary Chair Joe Biden is yet more evidence of the oily confidence without merit he has always demonstrated. Senator Orrin Hatch asks the questions about how it is that a woman who was harassed would not only follow her harasser from one job to the next but then continue to contact him a dozen times over the years after their time working together. Justice Thomas’s memoir ended with his survival of the nomination process. Created Equal gives us some sense of the man’s work, noting that though detractors often attribute his silence from the bench to some lack of intelligence, Justice Thomas’s own view is that he is not there to verbally joust with lawyers but to hear their cases and decide. Rather than being a simple follower of others’ opinions, Justice Thomas has written over six hundred opinions, thirty percent more than any other sitting Supreme Court justice. The film ends with a happy judge. It seems clear he has returned to the Catholic faith he abandoned in 1968, but this is not explained. His vacation time is spent traversing what he calls “the regular parts” of the U. in his RV, and his work time is spent with clerks who get labeled “third-tier trash” since they come from colleges in those regular parts. Justice Thomas clearly gets on with people like himself who are overlooked and undervalued because of their race or their economic class. He is more comfortable with them than other D. C. denizens, perhaps due to his belief that they too, by God, are created equal. Did you know that over 2,000 rapes are committed every year by boys under the age of 18 in India? And those are just the registered cases.
With a run time of just under 2 hours, Mardaani 2' will keep you hooked from the first scene till the last.
*Recommend & worth a watch*
Rani Mukerji once again steals the show with her brave act.
The film's pace is rapid and adds to the thrill even as we see the villain constantly (and quite unbelievably) outsmarting the cops.
There's never a dull moment in Mardaani 2. it is a brutal story that's sometimes hard to stomach, but it needs to be told.

Rani Mukerji is back in her action flick franchise, Mardaani 2. Written and directed by Gopi Puthran, this film is based in Kota, Rajasthan. Where a young boy bruitally raps a girl and then kills her. How IPS Shivani Roy solves the case to catch the bad guy is what the film is about.
Mardaani brought the badest villian possible in new age cinema. This time too they are showcasing the bad man very badly. Newcomer, Vishal Jethwa has delivered a spledid performance. Everybody gonna hate him for sure. And that's where he wins!
Rani Mukerji is absolutely superb. She is giving one after another fab performances. I got goosebumps in the end when she was doing what has to be done at that moment. I was stunned by the vibes at the end of the film. Some viewers were clapping and that surely was sudden. Because this film has the perfect ending. After hearing so many news of rapes and murders, this type of end captures your soul from the left, right and centre.
Kudos to the team. To the writer and director, for such an engaging story. Though, I must write that this film could have been made extremely well. Few scenes could have added so much depth for sure. Also, This film is a must watch. For all Indians. Just like a little bit in first half could make it cult.
I like that background tune. It was fantastic. Loved all twists and turns throughout the run. You will never feel low at any moment. Breaking of fourth wall for the rapist character was something like never before. We were into that bad man's ill mind just because of that.
On the whole, Mardaani 2 is surely a must watch. It will play with your sensibility and mentality nicely. Wait for the vibrant end to catch you. And let's hope for the better change in the world.

8. Must Peeter - enamasti Madalmaade traditsioon, kus Must Peeter on ajalooliselt olnud Jõuluvana ori. I will keep this short & simple as there is not much to say about this film, so i was unaware of a 1974 original & a 2006 remake which i haven't not watched & will not watch.
99% of this film is just talking that has no actual bulk to do with the story of the film in any way, the trailer for the film is pretty much the film in a nutshell. You know what is going to happen from the get go, the evil boys with their weird cult thing are the bad ones from the start. Then theres the filler which is all the talking, theres a few killings throughout the film but are done within 5 seconds, then we get to the end where the girls find the room the boys are doing the ritual thing, they have a fight & its over. great.
Give it a miss, don't watch this.

Cuando coño saldrá ya la quiero verrrrr. Kuidas tähistatakse jõule mujal maailmas? Jõulud Austraalias on tavaliselt väga palavad. Samuti on austraallastele tuttav sündmus Carols by Candlelight, kus kogunetakse Melbourne linnaväljakule ja lauldakse jõululaule. Samuti on neil kombeks kaunistada pisikesi õlilampe punaste lilledega. Venetsueelas toovad pered 16. detsembril välja spetsiaalselt kujundatud pesebres, kus on kujutatud stseene piiblist. Jõuludele eelneb 40 päevane advendi aeg, mil on paast. Just Ameerikast on meile tulnud tuttav koheva habeme ja punase mantliga jõuluvana. Kuid erinevates osariikides on jõulude tähistamine erinev, kuna kolooniaid asutasid erinevad maad. Näiteks Alaskas kaunistatakse uksed ananassidega, mis on külalislahkuse sümboliks. Kuid Washingtonis on kombeks presidendil süüdata keskväljakul oleva kuuse tuled.

Erutuse lisamiseks ja müstikaloori tekitamiseks sobivad luksuslikud BonBon’i kimonod, mille alt piilub BonBon’i avatud pesu (nt Silver Mist Avatud Bodi või Red Flame pesu). FOTO: BonBon Finišisse pürgivad naised Naiste jaoks on eelmäng äärmiselt oluline. Soovitused meestele: edu võti on enesekindel naine ja mänguline lähenemine FOTO: BonBon “Happy wife, happy life”, kõlab tuntud ütlus. Mees tahab näha naudingut naise silmis, see on kõige erutavam asi. BonBon’i professionaalsed teenindajad aitavad teil õiged suurused ja parimad lahendused leida. BonBon Lingerie ja Must Panter on teinud koostööd alates 2018 aastast. Liit sündis ühisest huvist Eesti naiste enesekindluse ja heaolu suurendamise vastu, samuti soovist pakkuda kõrgeimat kvaliteeti. Ülemiste ja Nautica keskustes asuvates BonBoni poodides on võimalik tutvuda väikese hulga erootikatoodetega ja Musta Pantri e-poest saad soetada BonBon’i kõige provokatiivsemat pesu.

Although it could be that this movie was made in some even worse a place; some sort of a trash factory, perhaps.
In civilized occidental countries, gender studies" have luckily been terminated. Deplorably, movies such as this still manage to squeeze out at times. I'm terribly sorry for that. And if you are one of the unfortunate souls that actually paid money to see this movie, I highly recommend you all to try and get your money back for the disappointing and faulty product that this movie is.
Also, I wouldn't be just angry at the writers of this tripe: the producers are the bigger culprits here, as their sole purpose and job is to slide in these poisonous things and ideas obeying the dangerous agenda that they are a part of. Writers are just small potatoes, so to speak. Producers are the fat-cats that worship the the ultimate evil behind the shiny façade of Tinseltown - or whatever that awful place might in reality be in the end.

Hvíter Hvíter Dager, Iceland's Oscar entry for Best Foreign Film this year, is a quiet, mature look at grief and memory. It is about a man who carries within him a love so pure, he struggles to understand anything else. It is about refusing to let go of the version of someone you want to hold onto forever.
The narrative slowly unravels like a novel as themes are explored through nuance and metaphor. The delicate dealing with love lost recalls Lee Chang-dong's Secret Sunshine and Céline Sciamma's Portrait de La Jeune Fille en Feu, regarding the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice. The cinematography, shot in a noticeably textured 35mm, is peculiar in the way it involves the setting and keeps us a certain physical distance from the characters. I think Michael Haneke would be proud of this film.
The central character Ingimunder's relationship with his granddaughter Salka serves the film in predictable but endearing ways. Strong child acting is often taken for granted, but Ída Mekkín Hlynsdóttir's performance is far from typical. It is also a testament to both fine direction (Hlynur Palmason) and strong casting because the two leads are almost irreplaceable and truly contribute to make the film something special.
A White, White Day is enriched by its simplicity and singularity as it takes on heavy themes. The characters are real, the story is thoughtfully restrained, and the ending is remarkable. One of the more memorable films of the year.

A legfehérebb nap trailer. Ingumundur lives alone on a desolate farm. He is trying to rebuild his house and is looking after his granddaughter from time to time. He is quiet on the surface, but underneath he is grieving for his recently deceased wife. When a disturbing detail about his wife's past suddenly comes to the surface it threatens to destroy the fragile peace he has created, and affects everyone he loves.
When the movie starts with good few minutes of a car driving down a misty road you know you are in for a long ride. The harsh landscape of the setting is almost a character in the film. It gives the movie almost a magnetic quality. But there's a sense of imminent tragedy lurking underneath it all.
WHITE WHITE DAY tells a seemingly simple story, but is secretive at times, letting the viewers decide for themselves what motivates the characters. And it is often what happens off screen that has the real impact.
The cinematography however goes a bit overboard with still static shots of everchanging nature, as beautiful as they are they quickly turn irritating.
There are wonderful performances from all involved, specifically a tour de force from the lead Ingvar Siggurdson, as he slowly goes to pieces, his anger, pain and frustration tearing him apart on the inside, as he is just sitting there quietly like a bomb ready to go off.
WHITE WHITE DAY has a story to tell and has some interesting characters to match. It is, however first, and foremost an Arthouse film that tries to experiment with cinematography, light and pacing. It also relies on the viewer's attention, but it is a long, slightly depressing movie and not everyone will last the distance. But if you do it is rather rewarding.
Some movies hide the fact that they have little to say beyond the artistic impressions. WHITE WHITE DAY is not such a film.

I have so much love for this crew. They basically made the soundtrack to my 10-24 years. Everyones teeth in these videos are either damaged, sharp, or a few are missing. Reject False Icons is a film which is a real treat for fans of Gorillaz. In short, the film covers the making of "Humanz" and "The Now Now" while their Humanz Tour took place during 2017 and 2018. The entire film is shot in black/white, with some exceptions here and there. It gives a nice touch.
The film itself does not have any commentary or offers any, and as such, the movie goes on in showing highlights of their tour and composing of the albums. It's really interesting to see how Damon and Jamie have worked a lot the past 20 years on Gorillaz, and if I am honest, the movie sparkled the light and made me remember why I love Gorillaz in the first place.
The band has become from a 3 man team to a full-fledged 100+ family. Gorillaz has become such a diverse band and has a criminal record of collaborations around the world. During the clips you saw while the album Humanz was made, you could see and feel the excitement of the entire team during production. They were on fire, had passion, and made the thing as good as it can be. It's a bunch of people working on new projects, while the hyperrealistic nature of the 4 characters is always put first. The band is one of the best that are out there and just started after 2 people sat on a couch and said "Let's make a band" intending to criticise the music industry with each of the characters resembling an oversaturation of a tribe.
The film included a lot of live performances from various albums and paid tribute to Ibrahim Ferrer (Latin Simone, also known for Buena Vista Social Club in Kuba. Bobby Womack (Stylo) which was one of the best moments in the film. It showed respects to so many talented people, everyone was treated equally and shown in the film at least thrice. There were a lot of unique artists being on stage and behind the scenes.
The film had some honourable mentions, including:

  • Damon sneezing on-stage, never happened to him once.
  • Him visiting a musical group which made their instruments out of reusable material, and got handed a custom made violin
  • Him screaming into the camera like a madman and playing a banana like a saxophone afterwards
  • The Now Now took only 5 weeks and was recorded during the break of the Humanz tour

As of their tour, they have performed 96 times over 2 years and played music as high as over a week worth.
Reject False Icons is a documentary which shows character, charm, and love for the band we know.

Im sooOOOO happy i have my ticket. Watch Stream Gorillaz: Reject False icone décorative. Watch stream gorillaz: reject false icons movie. I do agree that Humanz is their weakest album, but I feel like the lack of subtlety may have been intentional. After all, the fact that things have gotten this bad means that subtlety isn't working. People aren't listening or caring about the subtext, so the Gorrilaz decided to be as clear and direct as they possibly could. I do feel that there are probably better ways they could have gone about this, and the lack of subtlety is absolutely a detriment to the music, but I think they cared more about the message.

Russells face constantly reads: “Ive been trying to escape these kids for so long but Im dummy thicc and the clap of my ass cheeks keeps alerting Murdoc” Change my mind... 0:18 when my friends steal my phone and take selfies just in the nick of time. You like it. I listen to this every time I go to see relatives. Its really nice since we usually drive through some really nice mountains and valleys. I heard the album Wake Me more than 15 years ago, and it quickly became a part of my life. I remember listening to this after going to bed each night. It's a very special album for me. And I'm so happy that it's getting re-recorded. I know Chester will be proud of this. The band is putting a lot of efforts to make him proud ❤ PS: It's so amazing that the younger fans of Chester and Linkin Park who never heard of Grey Daze can now listen to those classic Grey Daze songs.

Producer and A&R executive Remi Kabaka Jr. began collaborating with the band in 2016 after several years providing the voice of Russel Hobbs and was listed as an official member alongside Albarn and Hewlett in the 2019 Gorillaz documentary Gorillaz: Reject False Icons. [1] The band primarily consists of four animated members: Stuart "2-D" Pot, Murdoc Niccals, Noodle, and Russel Hobbs. Their fictional universe is presented in music videos, interviews and short cartoons. In reality, Albarn is the only permanent musical contributor, and often collaborates with other musicians. With Gorillaz, Albarn departed from the distinct Britpop of his band Blur through hip hop, electronic music, and world music through an "eccentrically postmodern " approach. [2] The band's 2001 debut album Gorillaz went triple platinum in the UK and double platinum in Europe and earned the group an entry in the Guinness Book of World Records as the Most Successful Virtual Band. [3] It was nominated for the Mercury Prize, but the nomination was withdrawn at the band's request. [4] Their second studio album, Demon Days (2005), went six times platinum in the UK [5] and double platinum in the US. [6] [7] [8] The third Gorillaz studio album, Plastic Beach, was released on 3 March 2010. The fourth, The Fall, was released on 25 December 2010 as a surprise gift for paying fan club members, then on 18 April 2011 as an official release. The fifth, Humanz, was released after a six-year hiatus on 28 April 2017. [9] Their sixth studio album, The Now Now, was released on 29 June 2018. Gorillaz are currently working on a project named Song Machine which releases new songs every month. [10] Gorillaz have won one Grammy Award, two MTV Video Music Awards, an NME Award and three MTV Europe Music Awards. [11] They have been nominated for ten Brit Awards, and won Best British Group at the 2018 Brit Awards. [12] [13] By 2010, Gorillaz had sold over 20 million records worldwide. [14] History [ edit] Creation (1990–1999) [ edit] Musician Damon Albarn and comic creator Jamie Hewlett met in 1990 when guitarist Graham Coxon, a fan of Hewlett's work, asked him to interview Blur, a band Albarn and Coxon had recently formed. [15] The interview was published in Deadline magazine, home of Hewlett's comic strip Tank Girl. Hewlett initially thought Albarn was "arsey, a wanker"; despite becoming acquaintances with the band, they often did not get on, especially after Hewlett began seeing Coxon's ex-girlfriend Jane Olliver. [15] Despite this, Albarn and Hewlett started sharing a flat on Westbourne Grove in London in 1997. [16] Hewlett had recently broken up with Olliver and Albarn was at the end of his highly publicised relationship with Justine Frischmann of Elastica. [15] The idea to create Gorillaz came about when Albarn and Hewlett were watching MTV. Hewlett said, "If you watch MTV for too long, it's a bit like hell – there's nothing of substance there. So we got this idea for a virtual band, something that would be a comment on that. " [17] The band originally identified themselves as "Gorilla" and the first song they recorded was "Ghost Train", [18] which was later released as a B-side on their single " Rock the House " and the B-side compilation G Sides. The musicians behind Gorillaz' first incarnation included Albarn, Del the Funky Homosapien, Dan the Automator and Kid Koala, who had previously worked together on the track "Time Keeps on Slipping" for Deltron 3030 's eponymous debut album. [19] Although not released under the Gorillaz name, Albarn has said that "one of the first ever Gorillaz tunes" was Blur 's 1997 single " On Your Own ", which was released for their fifth studio album Blur. [20] Gorillaz (2000–03) [ edit] The band's first release was the EP Tomorrow Comes Today, released on 27 November 2000. The band's first single was " Clint Eastwood " and was released on 5 March 2001. It was produced by hip hop producer Dan the Automator and originally featured UK rap group Phi Life Cypher, but the version that appears on the album features American rapper Del the Funky Homosapien, [21] known on the album as Del tha' Ghost Rapper, a spirit in the band's drummer Russel Hobbs. [22] The Phi Life Cypher version of "Clint Eastwood" appears on the B-side album G Sides. On 26 March 2001, their first full-length album, the self-titled Gorillaz, was released, producing four singles: " Clint Eastwood ", " 19-2000 ", " Rock the House ", and " Tomorrow Comes Today ". In June 2001, "19–2000" a remix of the song was used as the title theme for EA Sports FIFA video game FIFA Football 2002. [23] On 7 December, the song " 911 " was released, a collaboration between Gorillaz and hip hop group D12 (without Eminem) and Terry Hall about the September 11 attacks. [24] Meanwhile, G Sides, a compilation of the B-sides from the Tomorrow Comes Today EP and first three singles, was released in Japan on 12 December. Gorillaz performed at the 2002 Brit Awards in London on 22 February, appearing in 3D animation on four large screens along with rap accompaniment by Phi Life Cypher. The band were nominated for four Brit Awards, including Best British Group, Best British Album and British Breakthrough Act, [25] but did not win any awards. [26] On 1 July 2002, a remix album titled Laika Come Home by Spacemonkeyz vs. Gorillaz was released. It contains most of the songs from Gorillaz' first album, Gorillaz, but remixed in dub and reggae style. [27] On 18 November, a DVD titled Phase One: Celebrity Take Down was released. The DVD contains four promotional videos, the abandoned video for " 5/4 ", the Charts of Darkness documentary, the five Gorilla Bitez (comedic shorts starring the virtual characters), a tour of the website by the MEL 9000 server and more. The DVD's menu was designed much like the band's website and depicts an abandoned Kong Studios. [28] Rumours were circulating at this time that the Gorillaz team were busy preparing a film, but Hewlett said that the film project had been abandoned: "We lost all interest in doing it as soon as we started meeting with studios and talking to these Hollywood executive types, we just weren't on the same page. We said, fuck it, we'll sit on the idea until we can do it ourselves, and maybe even raise the money ourselves. " [29] Demon Days (2004–06) [ edit] The album Demon Days was released on 11 May 2005. The album debuted at No. 1 on the UK Albums Chart. [30] The third single was " Dirty Harry ", which had been released as a promotional single earlier that year. It was released in the United Kingdom on 21 November. The fourth and final single was the double A-side, " Kids with Guns " / " El Mañana ". It was released in the UK on 10 April 2006. [31] In December 2005, Demon Days had sold over a million copies in the UK, making it the UK's fifth best selling album of 2005. [32] Demon Days has since gone six times platinum in the UK, [5] double platinum in the United States, [6] triple platinum in Australia [33] and has sold over 8 million copies worldwide. [34] At the 2005 MTV Video Music Awards in Miami on 28 August, Gorillaz won two awards for " Feel Good Inc. " featuring De La Soul, including the award for Breakthrough Video. [35] Gorillaz performed "Dirty Harry" at the 2006 Brit Awards in London, and the band were nominated for Best British Group, and Best British Album ( Demon Days). [13] Plans were unveiled for Gorillaz to go on a "holographic" world tour in 2007 and 2008. [36] The virtual members would be shown as virtual characters on stage using Musion Eyeliner technology, giving them a lifelike appearance on stage. The virtual characters were first used at the 2005 MTV Europe Music Awards on 3 November, [37] and again at the 2006 Grammy Awards, on 8 February 2006 with the addition of Madonna, where the band played a pre-recorded version of "Feel Good Inc. The basic set which was limited to 60, 000 was the two-tone set limited to 1, 000 and the white edition which was limited to 4, 000 were released. Also included is the Gorillaz' MTV Cribs episode, the Phase Two Gorillaz bites, a new Kong Studios guide, a gallery, and short interviews. On 2 June 2006 the hopes for a Gorillaz film were revived, when Hewlett stated that they would be producing the film on their own. Film producer and The Weinstein Company co-chairman, Harvey Weinstein, was said to be in talks with Albarn and Hewlett. [43] In a September 2006 interview with Uncut magazine, Albarn was said that the band "has been a fantastic journey which isn't over, because we're making a film. We've got Terry Gilliam involved. But as far as being in a big band and putting pop music out there, it's finished. We won't be doing that any more. " [44] On 19 November 2007, a compilation album titled D-Sides was released. It contains B-sides and remixes from singles and bonus tracks for the band's second studio album Demon Days, as well as previously unreleased tracks recorded during the same sessions. [45] [46] Only one video out in 8 December 2004, " Rockit (or "Rock It"). [47] On 20 April 2009, a documentary titled Bananaz, was released on PAL / Region 0 DVD format. It contains the documentary film, directed by Ceri Levy, documents the previous seven years of the band. [48] The film was released online on the Babelgum website on 20 April 2009 followed by the DVD release on 1 June 2009. [49] Plastic Beach and The Fall (2007–13) [ edit] In late 2007, Albarn and Hewlett began working on Carousel, a new Gorillaz project which eventually evolved into the band's third studio album Plastic Beach. [50] [51] Albarn said "I'm making this the biggest and most pop record I've ever made in many ways, but with all my experience to try and at least present something that has got depth. " [51] The album features guest performances by Snoop Dogg, Lou Reed, Mos Def, Bobby Womack, Gruff Rhys, Mark E. Smith, Mick Jones, Paul Simonon, Kano, Bashy, De La Soul, Little Dragon, Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, sinfonia ViVA, and the Lebanese National Orchestra for Oriental Arabic Music. [51] [52] [53] On 18 January 2010, it was announced that Gorillaz would be headlining the final night of the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival on 18 April 2010. [54] The first single from the album, " Stylo ", featuring Bobby Womack and Mos Def was made available for download 26 January 2010. [55] In October 2010, Albarn announced to the media that he would not let the cast of Glee cover the band's songs, claiming that the music on the Fox network's TV show is a "very poor substitute for the real thing". This statement led most people to believe that Gorillaz had been asked by Glee producers to lend their music to the show, which they had not. Albarn responded to the confusion with a laugh and said "and now they definitely won't. " [56] On 5 October 2010, Gorillaz announced their new single " Doncamatic " featuring Daley. [57] On 8 December 2010, Albarn confirmed that a Gorillaz album recorded on the American leg of the Escape to Plastic Beach tour would be released to download for free exclusively to paying fan club members from the Gorillaz website on Christmas Day, 25 December 2010. [58] The video for " Phoner to Arizona " was released on Gorillaz' website for free on 24 December, and a day later, their new album was released, entitled The Fall. [59] On 18 April 2011, Gorillaz announced the release of their own version of the iPad app iElectribe, by Korg – which features loops and samples taken from The Fall as well as other samples. The new version features a Gorillaz designed and styled interface, and is customised to generate Gorillaz samples from their album The Fall and includes 128 new sounds created by the band and 64 ready-to-use pre-programmed patterns from Gorillaz, Stephen Sedgwick (Gorillaz' engineer) and Korg. The app was based on Korg's Electribe: R device app. [60] [61] On 5 October 2011, Gorillaz released their first "greatest hits" compilation, The Singles Collection 2001–2011. [62] On 9 February 2012, Gorillaz announced " DoYaThing ", a single to promote the Gorillaz-branded Converse shoes that were soon to be released. The song would be part of Converse's "Three Artists, One Song" projects, with the two collaborators being James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem and André 3000 of Outkast. An explicit, 13-minute-long version of the song became available for listening shortly after on Hewlett returned to direct the single's music video, featuring animated versions of the two collaborators on the track. [63] In April 2012, Albarn told The Guardian that he and Hewlett had fallen out and that future Gorillaz projects were "unlikely". [64] Tension between the two had been building, partly due to a belief held by Hewlett that his contributions to Gorillaz were being diminished. Speaking to The Guardian in April 2017, Hewlett explained: "Damon had half the Clash on stage, and Bobby Womack and Mos Def and De La Soul, and fucking Hypnotic Brass Ensemble and Bashy and everyone else. It was the greatest band ever. And the screen on stage behind them seemed to get smaller every day. I’d say, ‘Have we got a new screen? ’ and the tour manager was like, ‘No, it’s the same screen. ’ Because it seemed to me like it was getting smaller. " [65] On 25 April 2012, in an interview with Metro, Albarn was more optimistic about Gorillaz' future, saying that once he had worked out his differences with Hewlett, he was sure that they would make another record. [66] On 24 June 2013, Hewlett stated that he and Albarn planned to someday record a follow-up to their 2010 album Plastic Beach. [67] [68] Humanz (2014–17) [ edit] In April 2014, Albarn told the National Post that he "wouldn't mind having another stab at a Gorillaz record. " [69] Two months later he reported that he had "been writing quite a lot of songs on the road for Gorillaz". [70] On 19 October 2014, Albarn told The Sydney Morning Herald that he was planning to release new Gorillaz material in 2016. [71] Albarn has described the music that he has written for the next Gorillaz album as being very upbeat, humorous, and positive, stating that he plans on giving the tracks "a benchmark of 125 bpm and nothing underneath that", while also suggesting that it once again may have many collaborations. [72] [73] [74] On 16 July 2015, Albarn stated during an interview for ABC's 7. 30 in Australia that he would begin work on the next Gorillaz album: "I'm starting recording in September for a new Gorillaz record, I've just been really, really busy so I haven't had a chance. I'd love to just get back in to that routine of being at home and coming to the studio five days a week. " [75] Speaking about his relationship with Hewlett, Albarn said that the pair's well-publicized fall-out has helped their relationship in the long term. [76] In October 2015, Albarn revealed to Rolling Stone that he and Hewlett were working on a new Gorillaz album. [77] In April 2016, Hewlett uploaded two video clips onto his Instagram showing the continued work on the album. The first clip featured Liam Bailey and rumoured executive producer on the album The Twilite Tone. The second clip was a time-lapse video featuring Albarn, Bailey, The Twilite Tone and Jean-Michel Jarre. [78] [79] [80] On 17 May 2016, Gorillaz were in the studio with Chicago-based hip hop artist Vic Mensa. [81] [82] [83] [84] On 20 September 2016, Gorillaz began an abridged retrospective timeline of the history of Gorillaz releases since 2000. [85] [86] [87] On 3 October 2016, Gorillaz began posting a series of interactive multimedia stories revolving around the fictional lives of each Gorillaz character since their hiatus to their social media profiles, beginning with The Book of Noodle (she ended up in Japan and tracked down a demon crime boss), then The Book of Russel (he was still a giant from the storyline of Plastic Beach, where he washed up on the shores of North Korea and starved so much he shrank back to normal size), then The Book of Murdoc (he was captured by the band's record label EMI at sea and told to make another album), and finishing with The Book of 2-D (he was swallowed by a whale named Massive Dick on Plastic Beach, and washed up on the shores of Mexico, where to survive he had to eat the whale's blubber, but it turned out he was just at an empty part of Cabo San Lucas). [88] Gorillaz (with Albarn to the left) on stage at the Brixton Academy in London, June 2017 On 8 October 2016, Noodle was given her own Instagram page and was announced to be the Global Ambassador of Jaguar Racing. [90] [91] On 6 March, Gorillaz announced the launch of their own festival, called Demon Dayz Festival, which took place on 10 June 2017 at Dreamland Margate in Margate, Kent, England. [92] [93] [94] The band headlined the festival. [95] On 17 March 2017, the tracklist of the forthcoming album was leaked online, showing guest features from a variety of artists including usual collaborators De La Soul, as well as new collaborators such as Grace Jones, Vince Staples, Pusha T, Rag'n'Bone Man, Anthony Hamilton, Kilo Kish and Kali Uchis. [96] [97] [98] On 23 March 2017, Gorillaz announced via Instagram that the new album will be entitled Humanz, with a scheduled release date of 28 April 2017. [99] On the official Gorillaz YouTube page, two new music videos were released for their track " Saturnz Barz ", one of which was in a 360º view. The track features vocals from Jamaican dancehall artist Popcaan. The band also released an art video for the track " Andromeda ", featuring an animated planet in a galaxy. The track features the American rapper D. R. A. M., two more art videos were released: " Ascension " (featuring American rapper Vince Staples) and " We Got the Power " (featuring Jehnny Beth of the English rock band Savages and Noel Gallagher of Oasis). [100] On 6 April 2017, the fifth single from Humanz, " Let Me Out " (featuring Mavis Staples and Pusha T), was released, followed by a performance of the song on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on 27 April. [101] On 10 April 2017, a Gorillaz themed augmented reality app created in collaboration with Electronic Beats was released. On 24 April 2017, four days before the Humanz release date, another promotional single was uploaded, titled "The Apprentice". It is the only new song taken from the deluxe edition of Humanz. [106] On 21 February 2018, the band received the Brit Award for British Group for their work on Humanz. During their acceptance speech, a short-video of Murdoc was played, showing him being imprisoned for an unknown reason. [107] The Now Now (2018–19) [ edit] In an interview with Q Magazine in September 2017, Albarn hinted at another potential Gorillaz album being in production. He mentioned enjoying the spontaneity of recording and debuting music while on tour, similarly to the band's 2010 release The Fall, but expressed desire to make it a comparatively more "complete" record, adding that "If we're going to do more with Gorillaz we don't want to wait seven years because, y'know, we're getting on a bit now". [108] At the end of the same month on 30 September 2017 while touring for Humanz, the band debuted a new song in Seattle called "Idaho". Hewlett confirmed later on in December 2017 that the band planned to release a follow-up album to Humanz in 2018, citing a desire to keep the band going rather than take any prolonged breaks as the band had usually done with previous projects. Hewlett described several of the demos and new material as a "new direction" for the band, stating that he hopes to move the band's artwork in a similar direction. [109] During a performance in Chile on the final leg of the Humanz Tour, Albarn confirmed that the new album was coming "very soon" and premiered a new song called " Hollywood " featuring Jamie Principle and Snoop Dogg. [110] On 26 May 2018, the album was officially announced to be titled The Now Now, being co-produced by James Ford. [111] [112] On 31 May, the music video for the single " Humility " featuring George Benson, was released alongside "Lake Zurich". On 13 September, " Tranz " was released as a single along with a music video. [117] All of the songs from the album have a visualizer except "Humility". In the fictional Gorillaz storyline, the band introduced Ace from Cartoon Network 's animated series The Powerpuff Girls as a temporary bassist of the band, filling in for the imprisoned Murdoc Niccals (as seen in the band's Brit Awards acceptance speech for Humanz). [118] From 4 June to 26 October 2018, the band ran a bi-weekly text-adventure ARG called "Free Murdoc", in which the player assists Murdoc as he attempts to escape from prison. [119] [120] [121] [122] Murdoc was reunited with the band on 20 September, in time to join them on the final leg of The Now Now Tour. [123] On 25 October, the band announced they would be partnering with G-Shock to create a line of Gorillaz watches. [124] To promote the watches, the band released a monthly web-series called Mission M101. [125] [126] On 21 November 2019, the band announced a documentary covering the production of Humanz and The Now Now and their accompanying tours titled Gorillaz: Reject False Icons. [127] It was released on 16 December via a worldwide theatrical screening. [128] Eight days later, an edited version of the documentary subtitled the "Director's Cut" was uploaded through the Gorillaz official YouTube page in three parts: Humanz, [129] Humanz World Tour [130] and The Now Now. [131] Song Machine (2020–present) [ edit] On 28 January 2020, the band officially released images via social media teasing a concept entitled Song Machine. A 23-second promotional track entitled "Song Machine Theme Tune" was released on streaming services with an accompanying video. [132] The following day, further information was released regarding the project, revealing that new "episodes" would be released spontaneously throughout the year. [133] Each episode featured previously unannounced guest musicians on new Gorillaz material, with the first being " Momentary Bliss ", which was released on 31 January and features both British rapper Slowthai and the Kent -based punk rock duo Slaves. [134] Upon the premiere of "Momentary Bliss", Albarn revealed that the group had been in the studio with ScHoolboy Q and Sampa the Great among others, although he did say that these songs were likely to be saved for future series of Song Machine. [135] The group also teased a possible collaboration with Australian band Tame Impala on Instagram. [136] On 27 February, the band released the second episode of Song Machine entitled " Désolé ". The song features Malian singer Fatoumata Diawara. [137] Style [ edit] Writers and critics have variously described Gorillaz' music as alternative rock, [138] art pop, [139] hip hop, [140] pop, [141] trip hop, [142] dark pop, [143] alternative hip hop, [144] rap rock, [145] indie rock, [146] electronica, [2] bedroom pop, [147] dance-rock, [148] new wave, [149] funk [149] and worldbeat. [2] The band's aesthetic and general approach has been described as postmodern. [2] According to AllMusic Gorillaz blend Britpop and hip-hop, [150] while The Guardian described the band as "a sort of dub /hip-hop/ lo-fi indie/ world music hybrid". [151] According to PopMatters, the band's early work foreshadowed "the melding of hip-hop, rock, and electronic elements in pop music" that grew in significance in the next decade. [152] Live performances [ edit] Gorillaz performed Demon Days at the Apollo Theater in Harlem, New York in April 2006. In March 2001, Gorillaz played their first show at the Scala in London before embarking on a tour later that summer, with one date in Paris and two in Japan. The show, called Gorillaz Live, saw the live band playing behind a giant projector screen which covered the whole stage, on which was projected various visuals and images created by Hewlett. After taking a short break over the holidays, the tour resumed with a North American leg in February 2002. [153] In November 2005, Gorillaz performed Demon Days Live, a five night residency at the Manchester Opera House in Manchester, England in which the album Demon Days was presented in its entirety. The event was filmed by an EMI film crew for a DVD release, Demon Days Live, in late March 2006. It was later announced that an American version of the event would take place in April 2006 at the Apollo Theater in Harlem, New York. Within an hour of release tickets were sold out. [154] The show of 6 April was filmed for a live webcast at MSN Video. [155] Palladia (then known as MHD) also broadcast an Apollo Theater show in HDTV on 31 December 2006. [156] Gorillaz performing at the Roundhouse in London, April 2010 In March 2010, Gorillaz began a short six date tour as "rehearsal" shows for their headlining slot at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. The shows were open exclusively to Gorillaz Sub Division fan club members and featured no visuals whatsoever. These performances were the band's first public performances in four years. Gorillaz headlined the final night of the Coachella Festival on 18 April 2010 as their first proper, full show. On 27 April they were the main guests on Later... with Jools Holland on the BBC. In addition, Gorillaz played a two-night residency at London's Camden Roundhouse (29 and 30 April 2010). Mick Jones and Paul Simonon of the Clash performed guitar and bass respectively with the band and more than once in the evening chords from the Clash song " Guns of Brixton " were heard as a subtle reference to their presence. [157] Gorillaz embarked on the Escape to Plastic Beach Tour in October 2010, with some concerts preceding festival dates in the summer, such as at the Byblos Festival in Lebanon, the Roskilde Festival in Denmark, headlining the Glastonbury Festival in England and one show at the Citadel of Damascus in Syria. [158] [159] The tour took them across North America in October, Europe in November, and finally through Australia, New Zealand, and with one date in Hong Kong in December.
