Funny to think that Adam Sandler could've been The Bear Jew Donowitz in Inglourious Basterds

Could someone explain why Howard died? Personally I thought the movie wouldve been better if he stayed alive. In hoc to some very bad dudes, New York jewellery salesman Howard Ratner (Adam Sandler) thinks he has a way out: a rock from an Ethiopian mine that could net him over $1 million. Problem is, a famous basketball player has talked him into lending it out, and getting it back won’t be so easy. Diamonds are formed under extreme pressure in the Earth’s crust. But it seems unlikely that any gem has been subjected to pressure quite as extreme as that which bears down on Howard Ratner, the hero of this triumphant flop sweat of a movie. Howard, a fast-talking dealer of precious stones in New York’s Diamond District, is a man in perpetual crisis. He’s introduced mid-colonoscopy (the placement of the camera is one hell of a mission statement), wheels frantically between two women (his unimpressed wife and his adoring mistress), and plies his trade in a glass cube of stress (the blaring door buzzers alone will take 
a toll on your nerves). And that’s before you even consider the dead-eyed goons dogging Howard’s every step, determined to extract the debt he owes. Howard isn’t great with money, you see, or rather he’s never happy with the money he’s got, always angling for a big score. The film rushes alongside him towards something major: whether that event will make him or break him is the great unknown. The idea of a feature-length panic attack, essentially the cocaine-chopper-and-cooking freak-out scene from GoodFellas stretched out to two hours, might not sound appealing. Especially when you consider that Howard is played by Adam Sandler, making this his latest Netflix film after such non-classics as The Ridiculous 6 and Murder Mystery. Yet the Safdie Brothers’ Uncut Gems proves to be one of the most mesmerising thrillers in a long time, and Sandler is a major reason why it works. It’s a career-best performance, reminiscent of his character study 17 years ago in Paul Thomas Anderson ’s Punch-Drunk Love but even more layered and magnetic. His Howard is instantly iconic: part Job, part Jordan Belfort, part Jerry Maguire, he’s louchely attired, balancing out his shady wardrobe and dirtbag facial hair with a Star of David pinkie ring. Rarely stopping to take a breath, he is by turns hilarious, soulful and maddening; drilling down into a character who seems initially cartoonish but becomes ever more fascinating and human, Sandler is totally believable as a rapacious lowlife with big dreams. It’s a breathless hustle, a wild ride that threatens to fly off the rails at any moment. “I’m gonna come! ” he gasps early on, as he glimpses his latest acquisition, a hunk of rare Ethiopian opal he’s procured with great effort on the strength of a YouTube video clip. This mine-dug rock, which shimmers with all the hues of the rainbow and which may or may not have mystical powers, is the film’s MacGuffin, Howard’s own personal Infinity Stone, and he is hellbent on getting it to auction. Complicating this goal is a superstitious NBA superstar (former Celtics player Kevin Garnett, playing himself in a meta plot-strand which places the story as unfolding in 2012), fake Rolexes, a brace of local gangsters and other factors it’s better not to reveal. And doing a masterful job of orchestrating all the mayhem are sibling directors Josh and Benny Safdie, proving once again that they are the maestros of the New York stressmare. Their 2017 breakout hit Good Time cast Robert Pattinson as a crook hustling around the city’s grimier corners in the aftermath 
of a bank robbery. Uncut Gems follows a similar formula, but it’s even slicker and more propulsive, evoking such classics as Dog Day Afternoon and After Hours in its ability to wring maximum ‘what now? ’ tension from its milieu. Sequences that promise to deliver some respite from the overriding sense of dread, such as Howard’s attempt to see his daughter perform in her school play, have a tendency to spiral out of control. And even his late-night amorous visit to his mistress (played with a winning mix of guilelessness and grit by newcomer Julia Fox) is staged in a way designed to put you on edge, thanks to Howard’s inability to do anything without taking some kind of risk. It’s a breathless hustle, a wild ride that threatens to fly off the rails at any moment. But there’s actually a meticulous control of every element: the Robert-Altman-on-crack overlapping dialogue (designed to subtly steer your ear to the most crucial information); the ducking-and-diving camerawork (jittery even in quieter, domestic moments); the perfectly cast supporting players (it says a lot when Eric Bogosian isn’t the most menacing-looking person on screen); the intense electro score by Daniel Lopatin. All of it locks you firmly inside the head of a man who can’t slow down, even if he wanted to. “Boils... Locusts… Death of the firstborn, ” he recites at one point during a tense Passover Seder, listing the Biblical plagues. Then he grins: “Hardcore. ” For Howard Ratner, that’s a slow Tuesday. A monumental thriller, which vividly captures its world’s specifics and calibrates its snaky plot for maximum nail-bitability. Also easily the best film to ever extensively feature Adam Sandler yelling at a TV.

This movie is not only the WORST representation of Jewish people, but there was only one uncut gem (a strange looking black opal/ boulder opal) in the entire movie; unless you're speaking metaphorically. In addition, Sandler's character is not a jeweler. He is a jewelry store owner and he is completely ignorant when it comes to jewelry. The focus of his character is his dark side. A harmless gambler past who is due on many of his wagers. Mike Francesa plays his bookie. Ratner is constantly being hounded by 2 thug enforcers authorized by ARNO (Eric Bogosian) to collect from him or either hurt him badly. Bogosian is a bore. Money problems continue to mount for Howard. But as is the case w/delusional gamblers he believes the rare Ethiopian opals could be his lotto ticket to freedom. He takes what little cash he’s stowed away and places a high-stakes wager on the Boston Celtics. This includes side bets on Center Kevin Garnett during the 2010 NBA playoffs vs Philadelphia. Garnett is infatuated with the ROCK after seeing the gemstone up close during a tour of Howard’s shop. He believes it’s good luck and wants to purchase it. Howard tells him the stone is to be auctioned off. Unfortunately, Howards original asking price is much lower than he’d had it appraised for. Kudos to Garnett in his role. For someone who never had an acting lesson, it's remarkable how authentic he comes across. Uncut Gems is a gritty-no nonsense art house flick. Violent at times. My only complaint was the dialogue. The constant f-bombs were unnecessary and a distraction. The script seems to stereotype some of its characters, making them seem uneducated and downright mentally nimble. Uncut Gems is offset by superb character acting. Judd Hirsch makes a cameo. Turning in a nice performance as a pragmatic family member trying to help Howard. Had I seen this on accident late one night, I might have thought it was a fine film because that's what it was: fine. Everything you think will happen in this movie does. I did find myself rooting for the degenerate characters in the film, especially Julia (Julia Fox). Kevin Garnett was shockingly good in this movie. To think he wasn't the first choice; I can't imagine his part being done by any other player. Overall, I think it's a movie you see once and after a few months, you never think or speak of it again.

After making movies on ultra-low budgets for more than a decade, and with an only slightly elevated one for “ Good Time ” (which stars Robert Pattinson and Jennifer Jason Leigh), it’s clear that they know what to do with the money: in a very literal sense, the money is on the screen, and, for that matter, the money suffuses the action and provides the movie with its very tone.

Fucking phenominal. Uncut gems trailer song. This film understands the difference between a crime drama and a crime thriller. This film was extremly well executed at being suspenseful, fast paced, exciting and intense. Sandler gives such a great performance along with the fact that we in the audience are rooting for him even though his character is a dirtbag there are still moments of humanity along with character development brought in. He really does a good job of elevating his role to a point where you almost understand why he does the things he does but then when he does do something stupid you understand why he would choose to do that because he portrays his character so well. I really enjoyed the screenplay I loved some of the nods to 70s and 80s crime/thrillers. The direction is fantastic and really hits home base. However, most of all the original score is what brings this film to a whole new level. It is pounding and riveting with some classic 80s synth to make it slick and you can literally feel your heart race speed up and become on par with the score as the film progresses.

Characters are shallow, their motivation dumb. From another angle the main character could be seen as mentally confused and hallucinating, that was my feeling. I did not buy his narration of the story at all. Too much corny j-pop.

BookFinder As time goes on and you start selling your stock, you will need to start looking for other books to keep your business going. That’s where you will need a good book finding search engine if you want to start hunting for particular valuable editions. A particular favourite of mine is BookFinder. After entering details of a book, it will then search across LOTS of bookselling websites and bring you a broad overview of the deals currently out there. It will even include the shipping / postage prices to your location. Here’s some of what it brought back for Kipling’s “The Jungle Book”: Find Your Customers & Contacts Online A big part of a bookseller’s time is spent on networking. After all, it’s not what you know, it’s who you know, right? So it’s essential to know some good forums and mailing lists that fellow booksellers and potential buyers hang out at. AbeBooks has two great forums – a community forum and a Booksleuth forum (the last one is for people who can’t remember the name of a book so they leave clues and maybe you know the book they mean? ). They also have a Bookseller’s forum but you can’t enter that one unless you are a premium AbeBooks member. Another excellent forum is the one operated by Auctionbytes (full disclosure – I used to be a columnist for Auctionbytes).  Their book forum is regularly visited by lots of book sellers and I made quite a few good deals with overseas sellers here. Well worth making an account and visiting regularly. A good mailing list is one operated by BookFinder called Insider. When I last used it, it was VERY busy with lots of daily updates by other members, most of them professional booksellers. Make It Easier For Customers To Buy From Your Website As well as the common selling sites such as eBay and Amazon Marketplace, many booksellers also choose to sell from their websites.  There are many premium software packages out there for installing a checkout system on your site but the two easiest and cheapest are Paypal and Google Checkout. Both offer HTML widgets that you can place on your site and when the customer clicks through, they will be taken directly to that site to pay with their credit card. The use of the logos are free and you only pay Paypal and Google Checkout a small percentage of your sale. If you insist on building your own checkout system and / or you want to have some good looking payment logos for your site, Smashing Magazine recently brought out a downloadable list of credit card graphics which you can freely use. Get some good book covers When it comes to selling your books, you need to be able to show some good quality book covers. If you were the customer, would you buy a book with a bad quality picture of the cover? (or even worse, no cover at all? ).  Exactly.  So you need to make a big effort to show your books in the best possible light. It’s the picture that really will close the deal for you. The fastest way to produce a good quality cover picture is to go to Amazon, find the book then click on the link under the book cover to show the enlarged version of the image. Once you have that, either right-click and save the picture. Or use a screenshot app to take a copy of the image. Not all Amazon listings have this option though so there are other options you can try. You can try Googling for the cover, check Google Books, check Fantastic Fiction (one of my favourite websites) or check a site such as the Book Cover Archive. If all else fails, you can just use a scanner to scan the book cover yourself. But scanning can take a lot of time if you regularly go through hundreds or thousands of books. Better to check first if a picture already exists online. The people to the left of me were on the edge of their seats, leaning forward engrossed in the very tense scenes. I felt so anxious as things were starting to spiral out of control. The pacing the acting, everything is just on point. Everyone in the theater was laughing off! This movie is hilarious as well! And the way they figured out he was innocent by walking the steps to the payphone made me think of 12 angry men. Again, great film, I wish I could write more but it's late and I'm more interested in reading up on this movie and the actual event it's based off. Please just go watch the movie. Seriously.

Screenplay feels a bit lazy —I mean, come on, the final monologue serves the sole purpose of explaining the whole movie to and for the audience—, and editing is at least arguable. Overall it made me feel hardly anything, although some scenes definitely had potential. However, part of it (I doubt it’s a lot tbh) may be due to my lack of familiarity with the subject. A full review of this has been a long time coming. As I figured would happen, when I finally gathered all of my thoughts it turned into something very  long. Nevertheless, I put a lot of time into it, and if you saw this movie and would like to read my write-up you can do so here. I may edit it a bit further, though. Some extra thoughts: Maybe my biggest criticism of this movie is that though it mentions Rihanna’s Diamonds, it doesn’t end up using it. Considering the absolutely perfect, banger filled collection of needle drops in Nocturama (which is still fprobably my favorite film of the 2010s), I will admit I was disappointed. Anyway, this an immense work. … Creeping through Napoleon's hallways, guided by cell phone light. Funny that John Carpenter came up in conversations around Nocturama  - both for how the young terrorists hole up in a vacant shopping mall in the movie’s second half and for Bonello writing his own pulsing synth score, as Carpenter did for his movies - only to have Bonello’s next feature be an outright zombie movie. Not that it’s a straight forward genre exercise - its shape is unique, moving between two different countries (Haiti and France) and multiple timelines, which eventually start to overlap and fold back on themselves - but it culminates with the stuff of true horror that’s genuinely unsettling and surreal. As for “what’s it all about? ”, Luke Gorham pretty much summed it up. This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth. Although the last twenty minutes are breathless, the introduction languishes and lasts about eighty minutes. Thus, in order to appreciate the very ending, you'll have to be patient. very patient... Beginning in Haiti in the early sixties, Zombi Child" deals with voodoo and is one of the best and most poetic horror films in many a moon. It is obvious from the title and the setting that we are meant to think of a much earlier film with a similar setting but that would appear to be where the comparisons with Jacques Tourneur's "I Walked with a Zombie" ends for in the next scene we are in comtemporary France and a group of schoolgirls are being taught French history in a very white classroom.
What follows is a deliciously unsettling movie that manages to encompass the pains of teenage romance with a tale of the 'undead' as a metaphor for colonialism and it actually works. I can't think of too many examples in recent cinema where two opposing themes have been as beautifully united as they are here. In some ways it's closer to something like "The Neon Demon" or the recent remake of "Suspiria" than it is to Val Lewton. Here is a film with a creeping sense of dread, we've all seen films in which schoolgirls are not as sweet as they appear to be) and the grand guignol finale is as spooky as a good horror movie should be. It also confirms director Bertrand Bonello as one of the most exciting talents working anywhere today.

I can't say that his voice is weak for Marius, but the teen-pop-rock-idol manner he gives his performance is really irritating. Malick is pure in his presentation of life. Sometimes beauty is a just genuine presence in a moment. No chatter. No exposition to drive a linear narrative. Just existing, suffering, finding joy, and ultimately putting together our own spiritual meaning with natures clues. His movies are so ambiguous regarding human relations and suffering, because the best part is discovering that your focused perspective on the characters are petty compared to the wonder of the canvas of an absolute, a god, a truth, or a universe. An expansive backdrop ready for us if we feel it as the characters subtly do. Its an awakening. Its refreshing. He never manipulates you how to feel about the characters or the story. They just live as we do figuring things out. Boring yet familiar.

Major hellstorm. Did anyone else think this was Cate Blanchett and Alexander Skarsgard in the thumbnail. Malick's swirling shaky camera verite never really appealed to me. The only movie of his I liked was The New World.

2:08 Maddison 👏. Lovely and moving reading from Simon. Terrence Malick's return to narrative form was unexpected to me, but I was looking forward to this film with a lot of enthusiasm. Unfortunately, I was just about the only one. The film opened tonight at my local theater, playing on the biggest screen they have, and only about 15 others showed up to watch it with me. As this film is more conventional than his recent features, I think a mainstream audience would very much enjoy it, and so it's really too bad that it's been ignored. I encourage everyone to go see it in theaters before it's gone.
Malick is still at his peak in terms of cinematography, but you might have expected his ability to get convincing performances out of actors to have waned from lack of use. Not so; while the performances are heightened to suit Malick's romantic style, they're also perfectly naturalistic whenever he needs them to be.
Although we're back on the guide rails of a traditional structure, the way in which Malick tells a story has not changed. We have the same obsession with nature imagery, with numerous lengthy shots. In this case it's mostly used for the purpose of straightforward symbolism, though the film's themes make use of it as well in ways that are more subtle. That "A Hidden Life" follows a less experimental approach also makes it more obvious that Malick has begun to repeat himself. Viewers will recognize many shots and visual metaphors from his previous films, perhaps most directly the highly-choreographed "couple meeting" shot. Much of the music is reused as well, with Malick continuing his reliance on Górecki to provide emotional weight. Not that this is ineffective - the small crowd at my theater found itself in tears at several points - but I think Malick is a bit too reliant on quoting himself to get the point across, and I'd like to see something entirely fresh from him. One bright spot was in the camera work. Though we see many of the same meandering camera movements as before, it's sharply edited to direct our attention to the narrative's subjects.
Surprisingly, as Malick's works (after "Badlands" tend to be very independent, the film reminded me of several from other directors. It's hard to imagine this film being made without Scorsese's "Silence" and Paul Schrader's "First Reformed" from the last several years. Several scenes and the use of camera angles in general owe a lot to Dreyer's "La passion de Jeanne d'Arc" as well. The strongest thematic resemblance of all, in my mind, was to "Calvary" 2014. Even if Malick had these films in mind as he made "A Hidden Life" the references are limited, and he delivers something genuinely new and unique for us to appreciate.
On its surface, the story is the simple one we've seen in a thousand forms. It's a story about human freedom and the responsibility that comes with it, and about what it means to be complicit. Themes like these are at the core of our understanding of people like Sophie Scholl, and they echo through our cultural memory down from the Nuremberg trials. Malick offers us something a little more subtle than that, although it's hard to notice at first. First we're asked to embrace the frailty of the human being, Franz, on the screen, and to understand him as a person who (like us) cannot see his place in history, and can only act here and now as he sees best for himself and his family. How can we understand sacrifice as a possibility if we can have no clear picture of the totality of the world in which we act?
"Through faith" seems to be the answer Franz and his wife Fani give us. They are devoted Christians, and the film's close examination of the faith they practice makes this the most explicitly religious among Malick's canon of spiritual films. Fani expresses the belief that all things will work together for their good, because they love God and endeavor to do his will. As we watch the film, it's very tempting to try to guess whether or not their trust will be rewarded. But no matter what happens in the film, we leave the theater to live - like them - lives of not-knowing, waiting, and hoping. What happens if God doesn't answer?
While that possibility might seem devastating at first, Malick has something hopeful and universal to offer. We're reminded in one of Malick's trademark voiceovers that "rain falls on the just and the unjust" reflecting trust in "the way of grace" he alludes to in "The Tree of Life. What we see in Malick is faith that our actions will be granted meaning in history, but he offers no visible guarantor of that trust. He shows us how this kind of faith helps Franz and Fani make difficult decisions, and cope with their lives' most challenging moments. Some of us may be tempted to think that kind of simple trust simplistic, but the framing of the film doesn't give us that option. We look at their actions as readers of history. When we affirm that their lives have meaning, we validate the faith by which they led those lives.
The film is a truly beautiful experience, and I urge you to see it on the biggest screen you can. While this is a relatively simple feature and occasionally self-indulgent, it's a rare treat to see the work of a great filmmaker doing what he does best. If you've been put off by Malick's previous slow-paced, more experimental films, I think you'll find this one much easier to watch. It doesn't feel its length at all (3 hours 5 minutes, according to the theater staff - possibly lengthened since it was shown in festivals) and parts of it are tightly edited enough to make my heart pound. It's a thrilling story told by our greatest creator of cinematic poetry.
